It was a light work day today at Olde Oak Farm in Maxfield, ME. I slept in getting up at 7am. The goat milking was already in progress and soon after the goats were put out to pasture in their respective temporary electrified corrals. For breakfast I savored farm coffee which I brewed in my very first coffee sock. Along side my massive tall mug was a plate of artesan-made cinnamon toast which I smothered with garlic and chive goat cheese. Jen suggested that I take some time today to explore the area by foot and directed me to a great view of Mount Katahdin about a mile from the farm. Walking to the viewpoint was a great way to work off breakfast.
Later Arlene, who is a major part of the crew at the farm, piled Greg, young B the WOOFER and I into the big red pickup truck and drove us and the yellow lab a half hour down various dirt roads and old railway accesses to a rocky shore of a beautiful swimming lake. The road was very bumpy in spots which was un-nerving the dog. Her
way of handling the bumps was to dig her head further into a lap of anyone sitting nearby and
not make a noise. What a good dog. When we pulled off the side of the road she knew exactly where she was and guided us down to the water. It was time to experience her wild dog-self and RETRIEVE !
(As I am writing this 15 little goats and 2 humans, one to lead and one to take up the rear, are running by the farmhouse window being herded in from pasture. I am at the desk in the study typing up today's DO NEWs. All the goat and human laughter distracted me for a bit......)
On the way back from the lake once again we had to go through the bumpy stretches and this time it was my lap to comfort a wet dog face. I didn't mind her at all.
It was a lovely DO NEW day but it is not over yet. The afternoon milking starts in 5 minutes. Tomorrow I think I am learning to make cheese. I am not sure. The weather report calls for some rain. If I am still here on Thursday a woman is coming to learn to make FETA cheese and I have been invited to learn along with her. We shall see...
Here's hoping you had a good DO NEW day! Enjoy your DO NEW night!
