LABORS OF LOVE

It is Friday.  These are early quickie DO NEWS so I can begin my weekend with a little chuckle and FUN.

After a client meeting I needed to drop my car off at the shop to replace a belt then walk to where I am staying.  It would be 3 hours before my car was ready and I wanted to do some biking.  After handing the mechanic my keys I asked, "Is that a vintage vette in the shop?"  Yes indeed it was and it was in mint condition.  What a beauty. A 1959 Chevrolet Corvette.  SWEET.

I had to get a photo of me in front of it.  (It didn't come out.) The mechanic asked if I wanted to get in the car.  OH MY YES.  It was the first time I had ever been behind the wheel of a 59 VETTE.  Long ago when I was living on Marco Island in Florida I had friends with old vettes but none of their autos were ever restored to total mint condition.  This was a true labor of LOVE.

TAKE ANOTHER PHOTO!

On my way to the house and my bike I passed a HUMAN SANDWICH on the shoulder of the road.  OH COME ON.  I had to pull out the camera.  As I passed I asked, "Just how many dollars per hour are they paying you to do this?"

She replied, "None, the owner is my husband.

"Oh my," I quipped.  "You are a mighty good woman."  It is about 85F and really humid out there today.

The things people do for LOVE.

On that note I am hitting the PUBLISH BUTTON.

Have a LOVELY DO NEW weekend my friends.  And remember that it is OK to talk to sandwiches and sometimes it is even OK to get into stranger's cars.

HAPPY NEW DOING.  TAKE PHOTOS.

MOVE YOUR CHI - THEN GO EAT

Let's DO LAST FIRST.  Dinner at SPUMONI'S in Pawtucket, Rhode Island.

I am still stuffed.  I had dinner out with a friend tonight at a NEW place (for me).  The food and company were great.  We ate at the bar and of course I chatted with the couple next to us.  They were drinking martinis and playing KENO.  I have never played KENO.  I am still waiting.  It will be a future NEW DO.  My friend and I were too busy chatting about his cross the USA trip that he took last month following the famous Route 66.  There definitely were a lot of DO NEWS along the way. I had a great time looking at the photos and hearing the stories.

Now to back up and DO the first.  I wrote about my DO NEW afternoon earlier today so it would be easy to post this after 10pm.  Here goes...

I became grumpy today.  Unfortunately that is not a NEW DO but it is a SELDOM DO.  I needed to move my chi and break a sweat.  It is amazing how that helps emotionally and physically.  The swollen glands and my "mala onda" (bad vibe) complied.  GOOD.

After dealing with some things successfully and unsuccessfully using way too many old brain cells I decided to jump ship and get out for an hour to ride of the grouchies.  I wasn't planning on any stops, I just wanted to go fast.  I took a familiar simple old route and passed one of the thousands of little graveyards all over New England.  This time I decided to stop and read the stones.  The cemetery is from 1815.  Over the grave of Cynthia B. Dean, a seven year old girl is this inscription:   "Cropp'd as a bud from yonder tree;  From death's arrest no age is free." It made me feel grateful that I have already had decades of more time on this earth to live, love and laugh.

I still needed to get some work done even if the clerks of the Charities Division of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts were in meetings and not available to answer my questions but I returned refreshed after my unexpected 10 minute stop for history and 50 minutes of hard cycling.  RESET BUTTON PUSHED.  I was good to continue.

Do you need a break NEW DO BUDS from yonder trees?  Then break set and GO OUT TO DINNER somewhere NEW.

Segway to Pawtucket, Rhode Island and dinner at Spumoni's. Scroll to top.

Oh no, it is the first DO NEW LOOP. :)

PATITO'S ONE MONTH QUACK

Today I was to take two women canoeing.  At least one had never been before, ever. I hadn't been in a canoe since I don't remember when and am not sure if I have ever "put in" in Newton to paddle the Charles River.  I vaguely remember something but if it is that long ago I can consider it a semi DO NEW.  I do know I have never brought these two women paddling. At any rate the day out was postponed until maybe next week. Catch me quick people.  I have been in New England since May 9th and my next big adventure departs in less than 3 weeks.  So many people not having the time and then the time is gone. POOF!

Well, the postponement gave me the chance to get my car looked at and to get some other things done in nearby Brockton.  While I was stopped at a traffic light I thought about going to the Fuller Art Museum which was just up the way but frankly I am still fatigued from swollen glands and not up for much walking around.  I was thinking what to DO NEW and then I saw it.  I mean I really saw it.  The entrance to D.W. FIELD PARK.  I knew it was there but never thought much of it.  I thought it was just a picnic area near the museum.  Of course I put on my right directional blinker and took the turn in.

I had no idea the park was 756 acres mostly of ponds with fish and wild fowl galore.  The road brings you all around it with parking areas dispursed throughout and benches to sit and chill out in peace.  Geese, swan, ducks, blackbirds, pigeons and more were also chilling out before the late afternoon rain began.  Once again a DO NEW practically in my own backyard.

HAPPY ONE MONTH ANNIVERSARY.

Now that it has been one month of DO NEWS I thought I would take the opportunity to clarify some things.  I was at lunch yesterday with a client and she was happily coming up with suggestions for things that I could DO NEW.  I have been sparking her brain synapses into action (for me).  "What about sky diving?  Have you been sky diving?"  I replied that I had not.  In fact, I was saving that for last.  Just in case the cute doesn't open (or I don't want it to open) it would be a good way to go out.  She hit me. Ha.  "And bungee jumping?"  Again that is a no for me as I value my spine at this age.  "A helicopter ride?"  Oh most definitely.  I posted that at the end of the first DO NEW day UP UP AND AWAY about the four seater plane experience.  The helicopter opportunity will present itself at the correct time.

Last night on chat to Buenos Aires another friend decided to take up the challenge but on a weekly basis as her schedule is pretty darn FULL.  I didn't suggest it as she was looking for one of those big things, but as an avid runner participating in marathons (I seem to have a lot of runner and adrenal junkie friends) a new running circuit would qualify.  And in a city like Buenos Aires one could enter almost any door off the streets and avenues and find some NEW TO YOU to experience.

That brings me to this clarification.  The DO NEW CHALLENGE is not about the bizarre or unique or about adrenaline pumping activities, unless you want it to be.  To do that everyday you would burn out from adrenal exhaustion.  NOTE: If you do burn out please feel free to contact me.  My specialties in complementary medicine are chronic pain AND adrenal problems.  But really, I don't want to have to mop you up off the floor next month.

THE DO NEW CHALLENGE is about getting you to look at your world differently and open your eyes to what is around you.  There are things to discover in your own town.  Sometimes a DO NEW will be big and sometimes it will be small.  People have work and family responsibilities.  Sometimes I just have a half an hour to DO something NEW between appointments and clients so I take that time and change my usual path, stop and discover.  To quote a previous post ALONG THE BEATEN TRACK

"So... when you can't readily see anything NEW to DO in a day then just take a different route.  It's new for you and you just might encounter more NEW DO ideas along the way.  Blaze a new trail, explore a new byway, navigate a new stream, just take the detour.  There's potential magic in the unfamiliar. It is waiting for you to discover it."

I am so happy for the feedback publicly and privately.  This is catching on.  People are getting more creative, filling up with ideas and carrying through.  It is self generating once you get started.

A question from one person was "Isn't it hard to come up with things?"  At first it seems that way but then you get into the flow of it and things find you.  You can't help but not notice a door that you have not walked through.  A listing in the paper that you once glanced at and passed over becomes more interesting and a HEY WHY NOT?  YES!  I AM GOING TO DO IT!

Time has a way of passing quickly.  I think all of us have said to ourselves at one time or another I never DO anything.  Oh yes you have in the past and will in the future.  You have done plenty in your life and there is so much more waiting for you.  NOW.  Make it a habit not solely an event;  TAKE THE CHALLENGE TODAY.

Oh one more thing...Yesterday I was five minutes early to my client appointment at her house so I drove down to the end of her street in the opposite direction.  There were three more houses and then it dead-ended.  I made the U-turn and saw her coming into the cross street.  I pulled into her drive in front of her.  She asked, "What were you doing coming from that direction?"  I told her I had a little time so thought I would check out what was down there.  She told me that the man at the last house has a direct access in front of it that goes right to the hiking trails at ADAM'S FARM but she has never been walking there. UH HUM.  She is an avid walker and it is right THERE.  How many years has she lived in her house?  More than 20.  Come on - get with the program.  :0)

There - I think I have made up for yesterday's lack of text.  ENJOY!

SHOT IN THE ENERGETIC VISCERA

Today after our session my client took me out to lunch at Patriot's Place by the stadium. We really enjoyed having some relax time together.  After we left I went over to check out BASS PRO SHOPS as I had never been in there.  It is the last store before the cranberry bog from DAY 2 of the DO NEW CHALLENGE.

Walking in I was impressed with the store displays.  That is until I got to the shooting range.  I am not a fan of hunting.  Promoting blasting innocent animals gave me a hit in the old gut.  The store has a lot to offer if you can ignore the violence aspect.  At any rate I need to go lie down or walk it off.  I leave you with a photo-log of their interesting displays.

Peace, Love and Non-violence.  Shoot targets not animals.

STEP ONE IS DREAMING

Dark skies, thunderous booms and torrential downpours were all included in the start of this Monday.  I didn't really want to go out in the rain but I hungered for some books about traveling westward.  I need to start planning my next big adventure.  I raced to my car dodging rain bullets and headed off to the AMES FREE LIBRARY, another H.H. Richardson building in North Easton. Massachusetts.

I hadn't been to that library since before its major renovation.  The interior was all NEW for me and absolutely gorgeous. I could have stayed in there all day but I started to fall asleep in one of the comfy chairs.  All the weather changes of late have delivered unto me swollen glands.  I am running a little low on fuel today.  Some good books, a warm blanket and a tight roof over my head will be a good way to heal up for more work tomorrow.  A little chicken soup won't hurt either.

Pulling into the library parking lot I noticed a sign for the QUESET HOUSE located behind the main library.  I asked the librarian about it.  She told me that the library uses the bottom floor of the mansion for events big and small and that the top floor is rented out by a company. The rain had subsided so I decided to go and take a look around.

The gardens are in the process of being restored to when the mansion was in its hey day in the 1920's.  It will be lovely when it is finished.  In fact, it is lovely now even with the rain.  I suggest that you go visit.  I can envision me sitting out there in the not far off future, enjoying a nice day with my book finds and taking some quiet Queset time.  That is a definite NEW DO to come.

For now it is a cup of hot tea, my rag wool socks, the sofa, some classical music and a travel guide for the Southwest USA and Las Vegas. I need another book for the upper states.  It might be better to travel them in summer and the southern ones in the fall.  We'll see.  Step one is the dreaming.  A good book can help.

So here is a DO NEW for you if you don't already DO it..  Chat with a librarian. He/She is a true wealth of information.  Get a library card and visit your public libraries often.  They are free and FULL.
